Aniak River Lodge
Western Alaska's best back-country Flyfishing Paradise
Aniak River Lodge is a truly classic Alaska fly fishing destination, combining comfortable accommodations and excellent food with top quality service in the middle of some of the most spectacular water on Earth. From mousing for giant rainbows to throwing poppers, streamers, flesh flies, and egg patterns at everything from silver salmon to northern pike, this is a section of Alaska that still fishes like it did when the very first settlers arrived.
The Aniak is an incredibly diverse fishery, famous just like Kamchatka for its mouse-pattern rainbows all season long, but offering so much more than that as well. A branch of the Kuskokwim river which boasts the greatest return of Silver (coho) Salmon in the state and one of the largest runs of King Salmon as well, the Aniak is also home to countless beautiful Dolly Varden, plenty of Arctic Char, the dry-fly sipping Grayling, trophy sized Northern Pike, Sockeye Salmon, Chum Salmon, and get this - even Sheefish! This last is a little known and by far underappreciated larger member of the whitefish family, and are considered by those who have met them to be the tarpon of Alaska!
Fishing each day begins at whatever time each client prefers, and is enjoyed from the lodge's well comfortable and well maintained jet boats, and wading vs. fishing from the boats themselves is simply a matter of client preference. The river is a veritable maze of braids, side-channels, and tributaries; and with so little pressure, is literally full of fish that for the most part have never before seen a fly. Basically all of the techniques any fly fisherman is familiar with will produce here, from skating mouse patterns to plunking poppers, dead-drifting dries, bouncing nymphs and egg patterns off the bottom, or stripping streamers, and the guides are happy to accommodate the preferences of each and every client day by day.
With this kind of diversity of opportunity spread across so many miles of the river's sprawling watershed, anglers at Aniak River Lodge are never at any loss for opportunity and follow their chosen passion for whatever they choose each and every day of their stay.
And while the lodge does encourage catch and release fishing at all times, anglers wishing to take home their limit of salmon can have them cleaned and packaged upon making that request.
The Aniak River Lodge season runs from mid-June through September, with fishing opportunities on those dates best planned as seen in the chart below:
Aniak River Lodge maintains three separate properties along the river, all of which are incorporated into each week long itinerary. Guests arrive first at our down river reception lodge, where they enjoy lunch and drinks while getting to know their guides before wadering up and boarding the boats for the twenty five mile run upstream to the main lodge.
The Main Lodge includes a five star kitchen with spacious dining hall and living area/lounge, as well as seven beautifully appointed guest cabins, each with its own private bathroom featuring hot running water, flush toilets, showers, and vanities. Outside seating and comfortable front porch chairs on each cabin also provide spectacular scenery and a relaxing environment within which to tell the stories of the day, and at Aniak River Lodge, of course there are always plenty.
The last two nights of each week guests travel ten miles further up river to a newly built and supremely comfortable tent camp. Essentially an outpost replica of the main lodge, this upstream camp features a large dining tent that has a lounge area complete with sofas and electrical outlets, a drying tent for waders and jackets, and separate Weather Port sleeping tents housing beds with plush linens and excellent heaters on carpeted platforms.
Hot and cold running water and clean shower facilities are also provided, and make all the difference after a wonderful day out on the river before guests sit back to enjoy a riverside fire from one of the comfortable Adirondack chairs.
Combining top notch culinary achievements with back country remote locations is no small task this deep in the Alaskan bush, but the chef's team at Aniak River Lodge accomplishes this with shining colors every single day of the season.
From the more than ample breakfasts of bacon and eggs, oatmeal, toasts, cereals, hash browns and fruits to the hot shore-made lunches of fresh caught salmon, pan-seared potatoes, onions, and veggies, soups and deluxe sandwiches out on the stream, enough of each day's menu consists of classics that any American angler will find more than ample selection to suite their taste and keep them ready for the day's fishing.
Dinners at the lodge are another affair, including deluxe ingredients and dishes from across the globe. Combinations of fresh meats and seafood, sushi and fresh garden vegetables are turned into literal works of art by the team in the kitchen, and each week on the water builds to an end of trip feast that has yet to garner anything but praise from our clients.
